WRYNECK, NEW HYTHE 3RD OCTOBER 2012

I was up to my neck in dust and rubble at the new house in West Farleigh on tuesday when I got a text from Terry Laws saying he'd just found a Wryneck in the east scrub at New Hythe. It was some time before I was able to make the  twenty minute dash to the lakes to try and see it for myself. My failure to locate it was disappointing to say the least, especially since I have never seen one anywhere, let alone at my local patch.
I managed to get back down on wednesday morning in the hope that it had booked an overnight stay and soon bumped into Terry and then Jerry and we spent maybe an hour or so searching the area. Eventually my east west zigzag across the scrub paid off when a bird flew low into a bush to my left and I was soon watching my first ever Wryneck. Terry, Jerry and another birder from London joined me and over the next half hour or so we were treated to much better views of this slightly mysterious little bird.
No pictures to brighten this short post because I just haven't been able to get out lately due to the new house, where, incidentally, I have recently seen three Buzzards circling quite low. I hope things settle down soon and I can get back to business as usual!

Nice one Phil! Adam told me about the bird but I couldn't get any time off work. I will be there early tomorrow for a look though. Fingers crossed!

Well done Phil, glad you connected with it...better than I did yesterday ;-(. Hope the new house is going well, and looking forward to reports and news on the neighbouring patch. Barn Owl will be a tick I'm sure and I reckon the paddocks at the back of the Good Intent look good for Wheatear, chat and who knows what else?! Maybe the same on the cricket ground which must be just a few minutes walk away form the new pad. Loads of beech trees on the track down to the church as well....Brambling??? Oh, and be prepared for the massed flocks that Fieldfare and Redwing that'll be descending on the nearby orchards in the next few weeks! And then there's the river and Teston CP - can't wait to hear what you'll turn up! We'll have to catch up for a walk sometime in the winter.

Adam

PS thanks for updates on Wednesday
